Amateur Radio - KB4MTO
I have been a ham since 1985. I upgraded to Technician in 1987 while at Vandenberg AFB, and recently upgraded to General. I will eventually upgrade to Extra, but don't plan on taking another 22 years to do it.
I got into amateur radio through my grandfather - W4GHA. I started with SWL and scanners, then moved into CB. It didn't take long before the pull of ham radio bit me.
While stationed in Turkey, I got my Turkish ham license, TA5ZC. I had a Drake TR-4C feeding a multiband dipole in the attic. I made thousands of contacts with that callsign. Unfortunatly, I lost all of the QSL cards in my move back to the states.
Today my setup is a Yaesu FT-897D feeding a 19' dipole in the attic. I am tuning it with an LDG AT-897. I also have a dual-band J-Pole in the attic for VHF/UHF. I am deed restricted, so I don't have any towers in my near forcast, but the dipole is doing me quite well. When the band opens up, it's all I need.
My HT is a Yaesu VX-170, my mobile is a Yaesu FT-8800, and I use a Bearcat BC-895XLT and a Radio Shack Pro-164 for scanning.
